Understanding IPA: The Pronunciation System That Works for Every Language

There is a stage in learning a language where you can recognize a word on the page, know exactly what it means, and still have no idea what it sounds like. The letters are right there. They are just not telling you the truth, because spelling is a set of local conventions and every language negotiated its own.

English negotiated badly. The letters "ough" cover at least six different pronunciations, and the letter "a" carries four separate vowels in "father," "cat," "ball," and "about." Once you start learning a second language, the problem doubles: now you have two spelling systems whispering contradictory instructions at the same letters, and the German "w" is telling you something the English "w" does not.

The International Phonetic Alphabet is the fix, and it is older than the telephone directory. One symbol per sound. The same symbol for the same sound in Portuguese, Thai, and Norwegian. It is what your dictionary is already using in that little bracketed line you have been skipping.

What IPA actually is

The International Phonetic Alphabet is a writing system for speech sounds, maintained since 1886 by the International Phonetic Association. Each symbol stands for exactly one sound, and that sound is the same in every language, so a transcription tells you how a word is pronounced no matter which spelling system it comes from.

The alphabet came out of a language teachers' club. In 1886 a group of French and English teachers in Paris, led by the phonetician Paul Passy, organized around a practical complaint: they were trying to teach pronunciation with an orthography that lied about it. They published in a reformed spelling of their own and called themselves the Phonetic Teachers' Association. In 1888 they fixed the values of the letters so that a symbol meant the same thing regardless of which language was being written, which is the moment the alphabet became international. The group took the name International Phonetic Association in 1897, and it still maintains the chart today.

The principle is one symbol, one sound. The sound at the start of English "ship" is the same sound as the one in French "chat" and German "Schiff," and all three languages spell it differently: sh, ch, sch. In IPA it is /ʃ/ in all three, because IPA writes what your mouth does rather than what a national spelling committee decided in some earlier century.

There are two levels of detail, and knowing which one you are looking at saves confusion. Broad transcription, written between slashes like /ʃɪp/, records only the distinctions that change meaning in that language. Narrow transcription, written in square brackets like [ʃʰɪp], records the physical detail on top: aspiration, exact vowel quality, the small things speakers do without noticing. Dictionaries print broad transcription. So does Fink. Narrow transcription is a tool for phoneticians describing a specific utterance.

That distinction also contains the one honest caveat about "the same symbol everywhere." Broad transcription is language relative. English and Spanish both write /p/, but the English one in "pin" comes with a puff of air and the Spanish one in "pino" does not. Both languages write /p/ because inside each language that puff never changes a word's meaning. IPA gives you the sounds a language treats as distinct, which is exactly what a learner needs, and it holds the microscopic detail in reserve for when someone needs it.

How to read the IPA consonant chart

Consonants are the easy half, because they are organized like a table rather than a landscape. The official chart sets place of articulation across the columns, meaning where in the mouth the airflow gets obstructed, from the lips on the left to the throat on the right. The rows are manner of articulation: whether you stop the air completely (/p/, /t/, /k/), squeeze it through a narrow gap (/f/, /s/, /ʃ/), send it through the nose (/m/, /n/), or barely constrict it at all (/l/, /j/, /w/).

Where two symbols share a cell, they are the same gesture done twice, once with the vocal folds vibrating and once without. The voiceless one sits on the left, the voiced one on the right: /p/ and /b/, /f/ and /v/, /s/ and /z/, /θ/ and /ð/, which are the two sounds English spells identically as "th" in "thin" and "then." Put a finger on your throat and say them and you can feel the entire distinction.

This looks like more memorization than it is. Most consonant symbols are simply the Latin letter you would expect, doing the job you would expect. The handful that are new to you are new because your own language does not use the sound, and those are exactly the ones worth learning, since they are the ones you are currently mispronouncing.

How to read the IPA vowel chart

Vowels are harder, because there is nothing to touch. A vowel is a shape of open air, and the tongue can sit anywhere in a continuous space rather than in a fixed number of positions. IPA maps that space onto a trapezoid: height runs top to bottom (close vowels like /i/ with the tongue high, open vowels like /a/ with the jaw dropped), and backness runs left to right (front vowels on the left, back vowels on the right). The shape is slanted rather than square because the tongue genuinely has more front-to-back room when it is high than when it is low.

The reference points at the edges are not English sounds or French sounds. They are the cardinal vowels, a set of fixed acoustic landmarks that Daniel Jones established in 1917 and recorded on gramophone discs so that phoneticians anywhere could calibrate their ears against the same sounds. Every real language's vowels get plotted relative to those landmarks, which is why a Finnish /e/ and a Spanish /e/ can be compared at all.

This is where IPA earns its keep, because the letter "a" is a lie in English and the truth in Spanish. English writes /æ/ in "cat," /ɑː/ in "father," /ɔː/ in "ball," and /ə/ in "about" with the same single letter. Spanish and Italian write /a/ and mean /a/, every time. Counting the inventory is the useful exercise: English is conventionally described as having around 20 vowel phonemes (twelve monophthongs plus eight diphthongs in Received Pronunciation, with General American usually counted at fourteen to sixteen), while Spanish has five, Japanese has five, and Italian has seven. Why your dictionary uses IPA

You have almost certainly been reading IPA already without deciding to. Oxford, Cambridge, Collins, and Duden all print it, as does essentially every serious bilingual dictionary published in Europe. The famous holdout is Merriam-Webster, which uses its own respelling system in its main American dictionaries, though its learner's dictionary, now published as the Britannica Dictionary, switches to IPA precisely because its readers are not native speakers who can decode a respelling.

The full chart carries 107 letters plus several dozen diacritics and prosodic marks, and that number scares people off a system they could learn in an afternoon. You will never need most of it, in the same way you will never need the click consonants of Xhosa unless you are learning Xhosa. What you need is the sound inventory of your target language, which runs somewhere between 25 and 40 symbols. Learn those and every dictionary entry in that language becomes readable, permanently, including the ones printed sixty years ago.

How Fink uses IPA

Fink puts a pronunciation line in the Insights panel under every translation, and the system it uses depends on the script. For the thirteen languages written in Latin script (Czech, Dutch, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, and Vietnamese) that line is broad IPA with the slashes left off, which is the same thing your dictionary would print.

For the ten languages that are not written in Latin script, IPA would be the wrong tool, so Fink uses the established romanization or transliteration scheme for each one: Hepburn with macrons for Japanese, Hanyu Pinyin with tone diacritics for Chinese, Revised Romanization for Korean, RTGS for Thai, ALA-LC for Arabic and Persian, IAST for Bengali and Hindi, ISO 843 for Greek, and BGN/PCGN for Ukrainian. Two different jobs are hiding in that list. Hepburn, Pinyin, Revised Romanization, and RTGS are built to be pronounced, so a learner who cannot yet read the script gets sounds to work with immediately, tone marks included. IAST, ISO 843, and ALA-LC are transliterations, mapping script to script reversibly, which is what you want for a language whose written form you are actively trying to learn to read.

The part that makes any of this reliable is boring and worth stating: the exact scheme is named in the prompt. Fink asks for "IPA (broad transcription, slashes omitted)" or "Hepburn romanization, with macrons for long vowels," never for "the pronunciation." A model asked vaguely will happily invent a different convention every time, and a transcription system that changes between requests is worse than none, because you cannot build a habit on it. English is the one language with no pronunciation line under a translation, on the theory that everyone using an English interface can already sound out English. When English is the source text being analyzed, it does get one, in Received Pronunciation or General American depending on the variant you picked.

How to learn IPA without overlearning it

Do not sit down with the full chart. Look up the sound inventory of the language you are actually learning, which is usually 25 to 40 symbols, and notice how many of them are letters doing their obvious job. Then learn the strangers individually, because the strangers are the sounds your mouth has never made.

For English speakers the usual suspects are small in number: /ɲ/, the sound in Spanish "ñ" and French and Italian "gn," which is not quite the "ny" in "canyon" but close enough to start with. /ʁ/, the uvular fricative that French and standard German both use for "r," made much further back than any English r. /ç/, the German "ich" sound, which is not /ʃ/ no matter how many English speakers pronounce it that way. /θ/ and /ð/ in the other direction, since those two are rare across the world's languages and are what learners of English struggle with. Tone is a separate mechanism and IPA handles it with diacritics, which is one more reason Fink hands you Pinyin's tone marks for Chinese rather than an IPA line.

Then use it, which costs nothing extra. Every time you look up a word, read the transcription before you read the definition, and say it. This is the "sound it out before you say it out loud" habit from how to use a translator to learn a language, and the symbols stop feeling like symbols after a couple of weeks, the way the letters of a new script eventually stop feeling like drawings.

The short answer

IPA is one symbol per sound, standardized across every language, maintained by an association that has been doing it since 1886. Learn the thirty or so symbols your target language uses and you can read the pronunciation of any word in any dictionary for the rest of your life. Questions people ask about IPA

Do I need to learn all 107 letters? No, and nobody has. The chart is the union of every sound in every documented language, so most of it describes sounds no language you will study contains. Learn the 25 to 40 that your target language uses.

Is IPA the same as phonetic spelling? No. Phonetic spelling writes an approximation using ordinary letters, like "fone-tik," which only works if you already know the sound values of the language doing the spelling, and it breaks the moment your reader is not a native speaker of that language. IPA uses dedicated symbols with fixed values, so it works no matter what your first language is. That is precisely why learner's dictionaries switch to it.

Why does Fink use romanization instead of IPA for Japanese or Chinese? Because someone who cannot yet read kana or hanzi does not need a third unfamiliar system between them and the sentence. Hepburn and Pinyin use letters they already read, carry the tone marks IPA would need diacritics for, and are the schemes their textbooks and dictionaries already print.

Can I copy the transcription out of Fink? Yes. The pronunciation line has a copy button, so it goes straight into your notes or a flashcard deck without retyping symbols your keyboard does not have.

Does the transcription show regional accents? Only where the language forces the choice. Fink's IPA is broad transcription, which by design leaves out accent-level detail, and English is the exception that gets an explicit variety: Received Pronunciation for English (UK), General American for English (US).
